International Aviation Art Contest

The theme of this years International Aviation Art contest was “Air Sports,” which of course encompassed all manner of different subject matter. Students illustrated everything from hot air balloons to blimps to jet air shows with enthusiasm (for the most part ;}), and skill. Here are a few examples from this year’s entries. Well done!!!

The Art of Micrography…Word!

Micrography is a lovely art form that dates back thousands of years in Hebrew culture. It can also be seen in Arabic culture. This form of art is much like stippling in its use of letters and words to create value and texture; however the use of text allows for a rich, unique interplay between text and the image. Featured in this post are a few of this year’s pieces; examples of prior years’ work can be found in the links for Art Galleries One and Two at the top of the page!

The inspiration for the lesson came from The Incredible Art Department’s website, which I have enjoyed and used often. The PowerPoint with directions can be found on the art resources link at the top of this page. Enjoy!! 🙂

Medieval Rose Windows

Art I students, during their study of the Gothic period in Medieval architecture, created lovely examples of stained glass windows. We modeled these after the enormous round windows typically found above European Gothic period cathedrals, referred to as Rose Windows. Students were asked to include the twelve-sectioned color wheel in their window. I chose a small format for these windows this year, about 6″ x 6″ because of time constraints — next year we may have to go larger!
