2014 Festival of Trees

This year SCHS’s Art Society again participated in the Fly Art’s annual Festival of Trees. This year’s theme was “All I want for Christmas…”, which we interpreted as “All I want for Christmas is You.” We hearkened back to the WWII era, thinking of all the soldiers overseas missing their sweethearts back home, and all the loyal girls over here missing their fellas. I think this is such a romantic era; I think of all the letters my grandmother has from my grandfather who was a merchant marine during the war. This is what really inspired this theme.

I pictured a tree covered with nostalgia: tea stain and silver, black and white photos of couples, old letters, some glitz. I told one of our talented students about the famous photo taken in Times Square, and she replicated it in clay, beautifully. What a lovely tree our students created. And the judges thought so too. . . we took away FOUR awards this year!! This tree meant so much to me, thank you to everyone who worked so hard.

Colored Pencil renderings of Christmas Bows…

This was just for a bit of seasonal fun, while tying in with our colored pencil study. In Art II we studied colored pencil use, and then tried this technique, creating the look of shiny highlights on black paper. Students also payed close attention to the form of the bows, using their observation skills to realistically capture their likeness. These Christmas bows turned out very nice!

Festival of Trees 2013

And a year later. . . our Christmas trees from the 2013 Festival of Trees! Each year the Fly Arts Center showcases beautiful trees decorated by businesses and organizations around town. Our art students always do a lovely job representing us! This year the theme was “‘Tis the Season to Sparkle and Shine.” The SCHS Art club did an awesome job interpreting this theme with a beautiful, handcrafted tree. Many of the metallic ornaments look like metal, although they are all paper. We were delighted to take home a 2nd place award for “Best Handcrafted.” Hope you enjoy our trees!

SCHS Art Dept. Nutcracker Christmas Tree!!

Each year, the Fly Arts Center here in Shelbyville hosts its annual Festival of Trees holiday bazaar. The theme for the trees this year was “Stories of Christmas.” Many community organizations enter, including the local high schools. We at SCHS chose to decorate using elements from E. T. A. Hoffman’s 1816 story The Nutcracker. Students did a great job, and the results were absolutely stunning.

The judges thought so too — we won three awards this year!

1st place – Most Beautiful

1st place – Most Creative

3rd place-Best of Show

I will include some general ornament how-to’s in a post to follow, for now, here are pictures…enjoy!! 🙂

*For my students* — incidentally guys, for a quick synopsis of the real story of the Nutcracker (which might be a little different from what I remembered ;)) look on wikipedia under “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” Has to be under that or you’ll get the ballet. When I read it, it all came back. . . .
